First appointment: If you live in the US, your first prenatal visit can be scheduled as soon as 8 weeks of pregnancy. If you live in the UK, you can meet your midwife for an initial antenatal consultation around March 8, 2021. It is also called your Booking appointment because it will book you in the hospital where you will give birth. During this first prenatal/antenatal appointment you will be asked about your medical background and plan in screening tests and ultrasound scans throughout your pregnancy. Your blood pressure and BMI will also be measured.
Dating scan: The dating ultrasound normally occurs around the 12th week, around March 22, 2021. It allows measurements to confirm the theoretical date of the term, to diagnose a twin pregnancy and to measure the nuchal translucency (that is to say, the thickness of the pocket between the skin of the neck and spine, which is an indicator of a possible chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome) and of course check that the fetus and placenta are properly formed.
Screening: Recommended but not compulsory, this blood test will measure the levels of 2 proteins that are normally present in your placenta and is used, in combination with the nuchal translucency, to detect Down syndrome and nervous system malformations (spina bifida). It should be performed between 12 and 15 weeks, at the earliest the March 22, 2021.
Second trimester: Your second trimester (week 13 to 27) starts on March 29, 2021
Development scan: Between week 18 and week 20, from May 3, 2021, another ultrasound scan will measure if your baby is developing normally.
Third trimester: Your third trimester (week 28 to 40) starts on July 12, 2021
Due date: You should be giving birth around Monday, October 4, 2021
